為紀念中華民國收復太平島70周年，前總統馬英九12日連趕2場活動，他認為今年7月的南海仲裁把太平島矮化成礁，「程序不正義、實質不正義、邏輯不合理」，還自備南海地圖講解十一段線，並拿出媒體報導，指今年1月他登島「被酸」，一一駁斥綠委，力陳「當時不做，現在會被罵更慘」；提到自己登太平島，是為激發國人維護國土意識，「現在沒有人會認為太平島不是中華民國國土」。
12日上午他先參加國際法學會活動，稱太平島有高品質的淡水，每日達65公噸，「100多人在上面活得很好」，反駁仲裁把太平島矮化成礁。當天下午再到台北中山堂參加「太平島光復70周年圖片展」致詞時則提到，南海仲裁公布後，東協沒再討論該議題，菲國新總統杜特蒂為了要改善中菲關係，也將仲裁結果「放到第基隆電動床二順位」，仲裁結果「影響力低於預期」。
至於今年1月他登島，綠委林俊憲稱太平島「太遠守不住」，馬表示，台灣離太平島1600公里，但倫敦距福克蘭群島1萬6000公里更遠，不能當成理由；綠委王定宇說馬英九「卸任前為何而忙」，馬稱仲裁結果公布後王定宇也登島，「他去幹什麼，我就是去幹什麼」。
馬英九也肯定蔡政府日前在太平島進行人道救援演練，他建議內政部盡速劃定太平島領海基點、基線；海巡署「強化海巡編裝」計畫在民國108年完成第一期後，能續推第二期。
